Created in the 17th century, the indoor thermometer has continued to evolve in terms of measurement method and design. We want this temperature indicator to find its place in all interiors and become a modern and elegant object.
Even if its new style makes it a real decorative accessory, the thermometer remains above all a measurement tool whose utility is recognized. Here, we explain how an indoor thermometer works and where to place it in your house or apartment.

How an indoor thermometer works

Used to mercury thermometers, you may be wondering how the
temperature can be indicated on a dial. As with clocks or barometers,
the dial thermometer also works according to a specific mechanism.

A. How does the indoor thermometer work?

Protected by a small case located at the back of the thermometer, its mechanism is characterized
by a metal strip coiled in a spiral and connected to the dial needle. But how
does an indoor thermometer work?
The spiral mechanism reacts to the change in temperature in the room where the
wooden thermometer is located and triggers the movement of the needle.
More specifically, the metal spiral contracts when the temperature cools and
expands when it warms up. This reaction causes the needle to move to the left
when the temperature is colder or to the right when the temperature rises.
You should know that this type of spiral mechanism can display a difference of + /- 1°C compared to the actual temperature of the room.

B. How to read an indoor thermometer?

To know the temperature, it's very simple! Just look at the position of the needle
on the dial, expressed in degrees Celsius or Fahrenheit.
With a range from -10°C to +50°C, this decorative indoor thermometer will indicate the
temperature of any room in your home, from the living room to the bedroom via
the veranda.

Should you adjust your indoor thermometer?

An indoor thermometer does not require any power source or adjustment, it has been
calibrated during the assembly of the mechanism. The latter adapts to changes in
temperature.
If you move or decide to decorate another room in the house with this
original thermometer, you will not have any adjustments to make and you can therefore rely
immediately to its indications.

Where to place your indoor thermometer in the room?

In order not to distort the temperature readings, here are some tips on
the location of your indoor thermometer.
For optimal use, we advise you to place your indoor thermometer
on a piece of furniture or a shelf, away from any source of heat or cold.
For example, it is not recommended to place it near heating or a window because they
could distort the results of the probe.
Indeed, if your thermometer is not placed in the right place, it will not be able to tell you
the general temperature of the room.
Keep in mind that this elegant thermometer is not suitable for outdoor use. Indeed, it is
not recommended to use it outdoors in order to protect its wooden support from humidity, sun and rain.

How to use an indoor thermometer optimally?

In addition, the mechanism, located at the back of the indoor thermometer, needs space
to react correctly to temperature variations in your room or living room.
It is therefore preferable not to obstruct the back of your decorative thermometer by leaving a
space of a few centimeters between it and the wall or another decorative object.
This way, it can indicate the temperature of your house or apartment with
the greatest possible accuracy.
The thermometer is an essential element of your interior because it helps you daily to
create a pleasant and comfortable atmosphere by controlling the temperature of your home.
