If you are looking for a charming and off-the-beaten-path village to explore in the Loir-et-Cher department of France, look no further than Trôo. This charming village has fewer than 500 inhabitants, making it the perfect place to get away from it all.

There are several interesting things to see and do in Trôo, so be sure to put it on your list of places to visit on your next trip to our beautiful country!

Trôo, a troglodyte village to visit in the Loir-et-Cher

Troglodyte villages are built on the side of a cliff or hill. The houses in these villages are often carved into the rock, which makes for very interesting architecture!

The village of Trôo is no exception - it is a magnificent troglodyte village that we highly recommend visiting during the summer, which showcases it at its best.

Some of the activities you can do in Trôo include visiting the troglodyte houses of course, exploring the village from top to bottom (be careful, it's steep), and hiking in the nearby Dreux forest for a breath of fresh air.

Eating local in Trôo

There are also a few restaurants in Trôo that will serve you local and refined cuisine:

- L’Auberge Sainte-Catherine
- L’Auberge du Château
- Le Restrôo de la Cave du vigneron
- Le Petit Trôo du Cheval Blanc

Special mention to these last two establishments which have managed to highlight their pretty little village in the name of their restaurant in a very humorous way!

Artists not to be missed

The village of Trôo is home to many artists, including painters, sculptors and photographers. There are also several art galleries in the village that exhibit the work of local artists. Here are the workshops you can visit freely while walking around the village:

- JaKob’O-stuDiO
- Christian Deloffre
- Atelier Seba Lallemand
- Frédéric Lère
- Atelier Michèle Lubineau et Gabriel Richard
- Atelier du haut

The ultimate experience: staying in a cave house

One of the things not to miss when you visit the village of Trôo, and more generally the Loire region, is to stay in a cave house! These houses are carved into the rock and have all the amenities necessary for a comfortable and enchanting stay.

If you want to live a truly different experience, be sure to book a stay in one of these cave houses! On this dedicated page to cave houses, the authors share their experiences and share with you a top 10 of their favorite houses to rent.

General culture moment: The Loire region is well known for its cave houses because of the high quality of limestone found in this region. This limestone is very easy to work with and sculpt, making it perfect for building cave houses.

The best time of year to stay in a cave house is summer, when the weather is warm and sunny. Cave houses are very cool and comfortable, even on the hottest summer days!

Other cave villages in the Loire region

If you want to explore other cave villages in the Loire region, there are many to choose from! The village of Orpierre is a very good option in our opinion, as well as the village of Baume-les-Messieurs.

The best way to get to Orpierre from Trôo is to take the D19 road. This road crosses magnificent landscapes and is very picturesque. If you are a fan of photography, there is no doubt that you will find incredible frames!

Trôo is too much!

Sorry, we couldn't help but do this one! If you are looking for a charming, original village to explore in France, Trôo should be on your to-do list! This village has a lot to offer, from its art galleries to its cave houses where you can actually stay. Don't miss it, it's a feast for the eyes!
